What is Prehabilitation?

Prehabilitation is a specific and personalised intervention designed by experts in the field to improve your physical and mental fitness level prior to your upcoming treatment (surgery or non-surgical treatment of cancer including but not limited to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal, and immunotherapy).

The intervention consists of exercise personalised to your fitness levels. In addition to exercise, nutritional guidance, education pertaining to relevant health conditions when suitable and anxiety coping strategies will be provided. People who need additional psychological support would be referred to a trained therapist.  If necessary, with your consent we shall sign post you to smoking cessation and alcohol moderation services. The duration of the programme is usually 1- 8 weeks, though it may vary depending on your clinical circumstances.

Attendant Risks and Discomforts

There exists the possibility of certain changes occurring during the sessions. These include blood pressure changes, fainting, irregular, fast or slow heart rhythm, and in rare instances, heart attack, stroke, or death. Every effort will be made to minimise these risks by evaluation of baseline exercise capacity at the start of your treatment. If you have any symptoms including but not limited to chest pain, lightheadedness, or palpitations, you must seek urgent medical attention.

Responsibilities of the participant

Information you possess about your health conditions, medication or previous operations should be declared at the start of the programme.

Use of Medical Records

The information that is obtained during the intervention will be treated as privileged and confidential according to QuestPrehab’s Health information governance and data protection policies. The information obtained, however, may be used for statistical analysis, audit, quality improvement research or scientific purposes (including publications and presentations in public forums) with your right to privacy retained. Your assessment, intervention and recommendations would be shared with the referring clinical team to allow a continuous, holistic and integrated support of your healthcare needs.
